The Initiative for Healthy Indoor Air is our flagship biotechnology program and the proof of our operating model in action. An effort reaching every school and home, running 2026-2032.

The problem

  • 42µg/m³

Annual mean PM2.5 in Pljevlja - among the ten most polluted areas in Europe.

  • ≈1,200

Premature deaths a year in Montenegro attributed to air pollution.

  • 392schools

Measured for radon - the one strong dataset; 188 above the 300 Bq/m³ threshold in at least one room.

WHO PM2.5 guideline: 5 µg/m³. Annual health damages from ambient PM2.5 estimated at ≈US$277 million - 6.63% of GDP (World Bank, 2022). Deaths: Institute of Public Health, 2024.

Aira is an initiative of the Montenegrin Institute for Advanced Innovation (MIAI), an independent, non-profit, philanthropic institute based in Podgorica, Montenegro.

MIAI founded the program and runs all of it: the Montenegrin-made monitor, the research in schools, and the work towards the country's first indoor air quality standard.
